Healthy Feet for Older Adults

Healthy feet play an important role in staying active, independent, and safe as people grow older. Aging can change the joints, muscles, and bones of the feet, making them more vulnerable to pain and injury. The skin often becomes thinner and drier, while the natural padding on the bottom of the feet gradually decreases. These changes can make standing and walking less comfortable. Arthritis, poor circulation, and changes in foot shape also can increase the risk of foot problems. Symptoms include pain, stiffness, and difficulty while walking. Some older adults also notice balance problems or reduced feeling in their feet, which can increase the risk of falls. Regular foot care helps identify these concerns before they become more serious.

A podiatrist performs a detailed examination to evaluate the overall health of the feet. The evaluation includes checking the skin, toenails, and circulation. They may also look at foot structure, and joint movement. The podiatrist also observes how the patient stands and walks because changes in gait can increase pressure on certain areas of the feet. Gait is the body's walking pattern. The examination also looks for corns, calluses, and other conditions that can affect comfort and stability. Early diagnosis allows treatment to begin before foot problems interfere with mobility or independence. Routine podiatry visits also help monitor changes that naturally occur with aging.

Professional foot care focuses on maintaining comfort, improving stability, and protecting long-term foot health in older adults. A podiatrist can safely treat corns, fungal nail infections, and ingrown toenails before they become more painful. Care also includes custom orthotics that improve foot alignment and distribute pressure more evenly. The podiatrist can recommend shoes that fit properly and provide good support to improve comfort while walking. Regular follow-up visits help monitor foot health and reduce the risk of falls caused by painful foot conditions. Healthy feet support better balance, greater confidence, and continued independence. If you have symptoms of foot pain or other foot problems, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for diagnosis and treatment.

The Elderly and Their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

  • Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
  • Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
  • Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.

When Flat Feet in Toddlers Deserve a Closer Look

A toddler’s flat feet can worry parents, especially when their footprints show little or no arch. In many cases, a toddler’s feet still contain soft tissue that hides the arch while the bones, muscles, and ligaments continue to develop. Ligaments are strong bands of tissue that support the joints. As children grow, the arch becomes easier to see. Even so, some toddlers develop symptoms that deserve professional attention. Warning signs include foot pain, frequent tripping, or difficulty keeping up with other children. Some toddlers also show uneven shoe wear or seem tired after short periods of play. A podiatrist can determine whether flat feet are part of normal development or whether another condition is affecting the way the feet function.

A podiatrist begins with a thorough medical history and a careful examination while the child is sitting, standing, and walking. Watching a toddler walk helps reveal whether the foot remains flexible or appears stiff. The podiatrist also checks foot alignment, ankle movement, and the position of the heel. Parents can describe pain, changes in activity, or repeated ankle sprains that help guide the evaluation. Imaging, like an X-ray, is not necessary for every child. It is used when pain is unusual, movement is limited, or the podiatrist suspects an underlying bone problem. This careful approach helps identify toddlers who need closer monitoring and those who could benefit from further treatment.

Most toddlers with flexible flat feet do not require surgery. However, children with ongoing pain, reduced function, or a rigid foot shape benefit from prompt evaluation. A podiatrist can recommend supportive shoes or inserts, monitor changes in foot development, and determine whether additional testing is needed. If surgery becomes necessary, it is reserved for carefully selected cases after a thorough examination and accompanying imaging studies. The goal is to improve foot function, relieve pain, and support healthy growth. If your child has problems related to flat feet, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for a diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Ankle and Foot Centers of Missouri, P.C.. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

Plantar warts are small growths that develop on parts of the feet that bear weight. They're typically found on the bottom of the foot. Don't live with plantar warts, and call us today!

Benefits of Walking and the Importance of Proper Footwear

Walking is one of the most accessible and effective forms of exercise, offering a wide range of health benefits for people of all ages. Regular walking supports cardiovascular health, improves circulation, enhances joint mobility, and helps maintain a healthy body weight. It also promotes mental well-being by reducing stress and improving mood. Despite these benefits, the impact of walking on foot health depends heavily on proper support and alignment, which makes footwear a critical factor in preventing injury.

Wearing the right shoes for walking provides stability, cushioning, and arch support, all of which help distribute pressure evenly across the foot. Proper walking shoes reduce strain on the plantar fascia, tendons, and joints, allowing for a smoother and more efficient gait. In contrast, wearing the wrong shoes can lead to a range of foot conditions. Blisters are a common issue caused by friction between the foot and poorly fitting shoes. Soft tissue injuries, including tendon strain and ligament irritation, may also develop due to inadequate support or improper alignment.

Symptoms of foot problems related to poor footwear may include pain, redness, swelling, and discomfort during or after walking. Blisters may appear as fluid-filled areas on the skin, often caused by repeated rubbing. Soft tissue injuries may cause aching or sharp pain that worsens with activity. Risk factors include prolonged walking, wearing worn-out shoes, choosing footwear without proper arch support, and ignoring early signs of discomfort. These issues can gradually worsen if not addressed.

It is important to understand that walking provides significant health benefits, but wearing proper footwear is essential for protecting foot health. Selecting supportive, well-fitting shoes can prevent common injuries and improve overall comfort. If you have foot conditions from wearing the wrong shoes while walking, it is suggested you consult a podiatrist for an accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and guidance on proper footwear.

Toenail Fungus and Podiatry Care

Toenail fungus can change the look and feel of the nail over time. It happens when tiny organisms grow in or under the toenail, often in warm, damp areas. The nail may become thick, yellow, brittle, or lifted from the nail bed. Some people also notice pain when pressure is placed on the toe while walking. Although toenail fungus may not seem urgent at first, it can be hard to manage once it becomes established. It may also spread to other nails or cause more discomfort as the nail changes shape. Professional podiatry care can help identify the problem early and reduce the chance of ongoing nail damage while supporting better foot health.

A podiatrist can examine the affected toenail and determine whether fungus is truly the cause. This matters because nail injuries, aging, psoriasis, and other problems can look similar to a fungal nail infection. In some cases, a small nail sample may be tested to confirm the diagnosis. Once the cause is clear, the podiatrist can recommend a treatment plan based on the severity of the infection and the patient’s overall foot health. Treatment may include prescription topical medication, oral medication, or careful trimming of thickened nail tissue. People with diabetes, poor circulation, or immune-system concerns should be especially cautious, because nail problems can lead to more serious foot issues.

Early evaluation is important because toenail fungus treatment often takes time and requires consistent follow-up. A podiatrist can monitor nail growth, check for changes, and adjust care when needed. Professional treatment may also improve comfort in shoes and support healthier-looking toenails. Seeking expert care helps avoid delays caused by guessing what is wrong with the nail. If you have thick, discolored, painful, or lifting toenails, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist for an evaluation and appropriate treatment options.

If left untreated, toenail fungus may spread to other toenails, skin, or even fingernails. If you suspect you have toenail fungus it is important to seek treatment right away. For more information about treatment, contact one of our podiatrists of Ankle and Foot Centers of Missouri, P.C.. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Symptoms

  • Warped or oddly shaped nails
  • Yellowish nails
  • Loose/separated nail
  • Buildup of bits and pieces of nail fragments under the nail
  • Brittle, broken, thickened nail

Treatment

If self-care strategies and over-the-counter medications does not help your fungus, your podiatrist may give you a prescription drug instead. Even if you find relief from your toenail fungus symptoms, you may experience a repeat infection in the future.

Prevention

In order to prevent getting toenail fungus in the future, you should always make sure to wash your feet with soap and water. After washing, it is important to dry your feet thoroughly especially in between the toes. When trimming your toenails, be sure to trim straight across instead of in a rounded shape. It is crucial not to cover up discolored nails with nail polish because that will prevent your nail from being able to “breathe”.

In some cases, surgical procedure may be needed to remove the toenail fungus. Consult with your podiatrist about the best treatment options for your case of toenail fungus.
